Maor (Light-Math) Program
About the Program
The Maor (Mathematical Literacy) program is an educational program designed for middle school students and teachers, operated by Range Center at the University of Haifa and supported by the Ministry of Education. The program offers tools for solving mathematical problems derived from the curriculum and is intended for teachers and students in diverse (heterogeneous) classrooms in middle and high school grades (7th–10th). It includes relatively short tasks that can be completed within a single lesson.
Program Goal
The program serves as a hub for performing mathematical literacy tasks, which aim to connect students to calculations in broad contexts and demonstrate the relevance of mathematics to everyday life. The activities are designed to develop the ability to apply acquired knowledge to solve practical problems in a variety of fields, including science, economics, society, and architecture.
Program Uniqueness
- Literacy tasks that demonstrate mathematical application in daily life.
\(\space\) - Tasks at different difficulty levels adapted to diverse abilities.
\(\space\) - Strengthening skills of mental flexibility and collaboration.
\(\space\) - Use of mathematical applets for interactive exploration and visualization.
\(\space\) - Most tasks are also translated into Arabic.
Website Resources
The program consolidates content developed by several academic entities:
- University of Haifa: Maor tasks team and “Models for Thinking”
\(\space\) - Technion: “i-MAT” tasks
\(\space\) - Weizmann Institute of Science: “Thinking Far with Mathematics” and “Mahalachim”
