Mathematical Maof

About the Program

The Mathematical Maof (Fly with Math) program (Literacy Tasks for Developing Mathematical Potential) at Range Center, University of Haifa, is designed to develop higher-order thinking skills among middle school students. The program focuses on the connection between theoretical mathematical knowledge and literacy application in the real world, in the spirit of PISA tests.

The program offers teachers and students clusters of inquiry tasks organized around everyday and scientific situations from the fields of economics, architecture, science, and society. By tackling these problems, students are exposed to the beauty of mathematics as a tool for analyzing and understanding reality.

Program Goal

The goal of the program is to provide middle school students with tools to apply mathematical knowledge in solving complex PISA-style literacy problems, by connecting them to extra-mathematical content worlds. The program is intended to foster student achievement and motivation for learning, while empowering the teacher in dealing with classroom diversity and promoting meaningful, up-to-date learning.

Program Uniqueness

  • A stepped structure that allows for a gradual and adapted entry point.
    \(\space\)
  • Inquiry-based learning that encourages classroom discussion and mental flexibility.
    \(\space\)
  • Integration of close didactic instructions for each task for the benefit of the teacher.
    \(\space\)
  • Practice of core mathematical topics (functions, geometry, proportion) through real-life situations.

Website Resources

  • An extensive database of online mathematical tasks for self-directed or classroom learning.
    \(\space\)
  • Dynamic and interactive applets for exploration and visualization of problems.
    \(\space\)
  • Selected demonstration videos showing the connection between mathematics and diverse content worlds.
