This activity invites you to learn about the meaning of the flag and the story behind each color, while discussing what they represent in French society.
Additionally, you can look at the map of France, identify its unique shape, and its location on the globe.
The Activity
The Flag of France
The colors of the French flag – blue, white, and red – symbolize the values of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, and fraternity.
This activity invites you to learn about the meaning of the flag and the story behind each color, while discussing what they represent in French society.
To understand the values of the flag, let’s bring them into our own lives:
- Liberty (freedom): What is the thing you love to do most completely freely?
\(\space\) - Equality: How can a chocolate bar or a game be divided among friends in an equal and fair way?
\(\space\) - Fraternity (friendship and partnership): Give an example of a time you helped a friend this week.
The Map of France
France has the shape of a “hexagon”.
- Look at the map of France and try to draw imaginary lines between its edges. Can you manage to see the six sides of the hexagon?
\(\space\) - You can look at the map of France, identify its unique shape, and its location on the globe.
\(\space\) - Now look at the map of Israel. What shape does it remind you of? (Hint: long and narrow, maybe like a banana or a ruler?).
\(\space\) - It is recommended to talk with the children about the location of Israel relative to France, and also that France is part of the continent of Europe.
