Activity 4: The Yin and Yang Symbol - Balance in Nature and in Life
We will get to know the Yin and Yang symbol – the famous divided circle, which is the heart of Chinese philosophy!
We will learn about these two opposing and complementary forces, and how they help us understand the balance that exists in nature, in the weather, and even in our emotions.
The concept of Yin and Yang (Yīn Yáng) describes two opposing yet interconnected and inseparable forces (such as light and darkness, male and female, heat and cold).
The activity (written using Gemini 2.5 Flash AI) encourages dialectical thinking, understanding harmony and balance, and develops fine motor skills through drawing.
The Activity
- Exploring Opposites: Talk with the children about opposites they know: day and night, hot and cold, happy and sad, quiet and loud.
Explain that both sides are important to create balance in the world, similar to the Yin and Yang symbol.
\(\space\) - Drawing Balance: Draw a large circle together on a piece of paper. Divide it into two in a wave shape (the Yin and Yang). Color one side in a light color (Yang: sun, heat) and the other side in a dark color (Yin: moon, cold), and add the opposite dot to each side (a small circle of the other color).
\(\space\) - The Emotion Game: Present different situations and ask: “Is this Yin or Yang?”.
For example: “Running outside” (Yang), “Lying down to sleep” (Yin), “Being sad and then cheering up” (transition between Yin and Yang).
