Activity 2: The Flag of Egypt
This activity (by: Roni Gonen – Eiron) presents the flag of Egypt, the meaning of its colors, and how they represent Pan-Arab nationalism.
The flag of Egypt consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors red, white, and black. In its center is a golden eagle.
The color red symbolizes the Hashemite dynasty, the color white symbolizes the Umayyad dynasty, and the color black the Abbasid dynasty. The golden eagle was the symbol of Saladin.
The flag’s colors are part of the Pan-Arab nationalist colors, and they were influenced by the flag of the Arab Revolt. This is a flag that was raised in Hejaz during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, during World War I.
The Activity
- The flag of Egypt can be prepared and turned into a puzzle.
\(\space\) - A number of flags of Arab countries can be printed and a comparison conducted between them.
\(\space\) - A simple memory game can be created (with two identical pictures or with a picture and the name of the country, where the child cuts and writes / copies the names of the countries).
\(\space\) - A map of the Middle East can be printed and each country’s flag placed on it.
