Activity 2: The Painter and the Mice - A Zen Story
What happens when a wall painting comes to life?
Join us for a profound Zen story that raises questions about the boundaries of art and our ability to create new worlds.
We will dive into a philosophical conversation about imagination versus reality, examine how artists use creation to express their worldview, and perhaps succeed in changing reality with a groundbreaking idea of our own.
This activity (by: Roni Gonen – Eiron) deals with the story “The Painter and the Mice” (from: Philosophical Fables for Children, Ahuzat Bayit Publishing, 2003).
This is a Chinese story that describes the power of art, which allows us to escape from reality.
The Activity
- Reading the story together,
while stopping before the painter’s final request (asking the children to guess what he will request)
and after it (asking why they think he requested this).
\(\space\) - Developing a discussion on the power of art and the different styles that give a personal dimension to creation and allow the artist to express their beliefs, opinions, and worldviews.
\(\space\) - The distance between imagination and reality and the ability to create a new reality through creation and a groundbreaking idea
(this can be expanded upon using Jules Verne’s books, which were once considered science fiction, while today some of the inventions can be found in our daily lives).
