Activity 2: The Sun as a Source of Life
Inspired by the Egyptian myth, this activity (by: Roni Gonen – Eiron) focuses on the importance of light and heat for the existence of life.
We will understand the sun’s effects on the environment, while understanding the changes in nature’s cycles.
The sun’s energy enables growth and prosperity and to the same extent can cause damage and aridity.
The sun’s effect on the climate can be seen at different latitudes across the Earth.
Due to the sun’s great effect on human life, the role of the sun god became central and is found in various ancient cultures, as well as in Egypt.
The Activity
Guidelines for parents
The history of Egyptian cuisine begins in ancient Egypt.
In archaeological excavations, it was found that the wages of the workers of the Great Pyramid of Giza were paid in bread, beer, and onions. In ancient Egypt, garlic and onions were widely used in daily cooking.
Even today, fresh crushed garlic, fried onions, and other herbs are used to prepare vegetable and meat dishes.
Since meat was and still is an expensive commodity, many vegetable dishes developed in Egyptian cuisine as a substitute, and in most parts of the country, the cuisine is based on food grown on the ground.
However, in Alexandria and coastal cities, there is an extensive use of fish.
The Sun’s Path from Sunrise to Sunset
In order to get to know the sun’s path during a day slightly, tracking can be carried out in a yard exposed to the sun in a flat area.
For this purpose, a compass, a rod/stick, and a number of smooth stones are needed, on which the cardinal directions and numbers (representing round hours) will be marked.
The rod should be placed in the center, and around it, the 4 stones should be arranged according to the compass.
Letters or words representing the 4 cardinal directions should be written on the stones.
It is advisable to decide in advance which hours will be displayed on the sundial.
It is preferable to start the tracking with sunrise and finish it at sunset.
It can be seen that a change occurs in the position of the shadow on the ground / surface.
A correlation can be seen between the direction of the (analog) clock and the sundial.
The advantages and disadvantages of using a sundial can be discussed.

Following the story, the sun’s effects on the environment can be discussed, as well as the things that need light and heat to exist, and the changes in the environment when the sun does not shine.
Following the reading of the story, two drawings can be drawn, one in the day and the second at night – animals active in the day / night, plants blooming in the day / night, and so on.
