Activity 2: Musical Instruments in Ancient Egypt
This activity (by: Dr. Omri Ruach Midbar) offers an exploration of the music of ancient Egypt through wall paintings that remain from that period.
We will observe a picture of female musicians and try to identify the unfamiliar musical instruments (like the harp and flutes) and discuss the status of women as dominant musicians in this period.
The activity integrates history, art, and music.
In ancient Egypt, there was no possibility, and they did not know how, to record or write down the sounds of music.
Therefore, the way it is possible to know what musical instruments were used and how the music sounded is through paintings from the Old Kingdom.
The Activity
A painting can be presented to the children, and they can be asked if they recognize some of the instruments.
After trying to understand together what is seen, it can be summarized:
The woman on the far-left edge of the picture plays something like a harp, and the one next to her plays an instrument that resembles a guitar.
The middle woman at the top surprisingly plays two flutes at the same time.
The second woman from the bottom right plays some sort of percussion instrument.
At this stage, it is possible to ask: what do all the people in the picture have in common?
They are all women. Indeed, in that period, it was customary for women to be the musicians.
