Activity 2: Chinese Musical Instruments
In this activity (by: Dr. Omri Ruach Midbar), we will dive straight into the heart of original Chinese music.
We will go on an imaginary journey following the story “In the Land of China” by Leah Goldberg, and dance the character of the dragon to the sounds of ancient musical instruments like the erhu (Chinese violin) and the guqin.
We will discover what China sounds like, get to know unique instruments, and invent amusing Chinese names for new characters!
The Activity
“In the Land of China” (Leah Goldberg)
- While reading Leah Goldberg’s story “In the Land of China”, we will listen to Chinese music in the background.
\(\space\) - As part of reading the story, you can talk with the children about various references to Chinese culture such as places, characters, etc.
\(\space\) - To the sounds of Chinese music, you can embody the character of the dragon or the dancers in dance, with appropriate clothing, etc.
\(\space\) - Inventing Chinese names can provide a smile-inducing conclusion to the activity.
Introduction to Chinese Musical Instruments
After the children have gotten used to hearing some Chinese music,
you can introduce them to Chinese musical instruments.
