Stepped Tasks
About the Program
The Stepped Tasks program (also known as “Steps to 5”) operates under Range Center at the University of Haifa. The program is primarily designed for teachers and students studying mathematics at a high level (five study units) in high school.
Applying the stepped tasks method leads to improved motivation, the development of in-depth mathematical knowledge and understanding, and an increase in students’ academic achievements.
Program Goal
The program’s central goal is to provide tools for solving complex mathematical problems through the use of stepped tasks, each containing a complex “target problem” accompanied by “steps” — less complex mathematical problems that mediate the solution. This structure enables learning that is adapted to the student’s individual ability level.
Program Uniqueness
- Focus on the five-unit level in high school.
\(\space\) - A “target problem” structure accompanied by mediation (“scaffolding”) steps, allowing for personalization to the student’s ability level.
\(\space\) - Development of learning skills based on self-regulation and strategic thinking.
\(\space\) - Fostering mathematical depth and achievement motivation.
Website Resources
A database of content for teacher and student use:
- Complex mathematical tasks in a variety of subjects: calculus, geometry, and trigonometry.
\(\space\) - Integration of matriculation exam tasks in a stepped format.
\(\space\) - Worksheets based on mediation (“scaffolding”) steps.
\(\space\) - Detailed teaching guidelines and dynamic applets for exploration and visualization.
