What is the difference between a Western nonsense song and traditional music?This activity page is an opportunity to listen to the sounds of Chinese culture. We will sing songs, get to know the story “In the Land of China,” and meet up close a variety of ancient and unique Chinese musical instruments such as the guqin, erhu, and pipa, which will help us dive into the heart of the musical tradition of the East.
Activity 1: Two Chinese
Get to know the familiar song from a new and musical angle. An experiential activity that brings together familiar words with rhythms and sounds characteristic of Chinese culture, with an emphasis on word games, humor, and communal singing.
Activity 2: Chinese Musical Instruments
Dive into the magical world of sounds of ancient China. Get to know unique wind, plucked, and percussion instruments, learn about the materials from which they are made and about the special sounds that have accompanied traditional music for thousands of years.
