Museums in France: A Journey to the Heart of Paris

Museums are gateways to the past and to culture, and France is at the heart of the global museum culture.
Institutions like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay were created out of a historical transformation that turned private royal collections into public property.
This page is dedicated to understanding the essence of a museum – what distinguishes an object at home from an object in a museum, how a personal collection is created, and what the value of a public donation is (such as archaeology in a museum).

In the follow-up activities, we will explore the unique story of the great French museums and compare these principles to the local Hecht Museum, to discover how art, architecture, and history meet in one place.
Let’s set out on a virtual journey to the heart of French culture.
